Pandemic Swine Flu
What is it?
A new virus probably initially spread from domestic pigs to humans which is now
spreading from human to human. Being a new virus nobody has immunity to it.
Although there have been some deaths from the virus the majority of those
catching it have mild symptoms. It is expected that there will be an increase in
transmission in the winter months and we cannot be sure that the virus will
continue to cause relatively mild illness.
Can it be treated?
There are antiviral drugs available which can modify the severity of infection.
A specific vaccine is being developed. It is likely that this will not be
available before the autumn and that initial supplies will be targeted at those
at maximum risk.

If you think you have flu - DONT COME TO THE SURGERY - STAY AT HOME. Try
not to spread the infection around. Isolate yourself as much as possible from
unaffected household members and be meticulous about washing hands and disposal
of used tissues.
If i need to pick up antiviral drugs what should i do?
Everyone needs to identify `Flu friends` ie family, friends or neighbours who
will be able to run errands for the person with flu. The `flu friend` should of
course only be helping if they themselves are free of infection.
If you are really unable to find a ‘flu friend` and need antiviral drugs
collected phone your surgery.
If I have flu when do I need to be seen by a doctor?
Flu can make you feel very ill. You should rest; take fluids and Paracetamol as
needed. If you are becoming persistently breathless (not just after a coughing
bout) or are becoming drowsy or confused you need to be seen at home by a
doctor.
